SSAM FINISHES 6TH PLACE AT UP ECON-NO-MIX QUIZ BEE
By Urania Lindo

Out of 84 teams from 42 participating schools in Metro Manila, the team of fourth year students Erika Bernales, Urania Lindo and Patricia Nepomuceno placed sixth in the Economics Quiz Bee at the University of the Philippines last February 6, 2012.
In the semi-final round, Bernales, Lindo and Nepomuceno scored 120 points and tied for sixth place with UP Integrated School. However, only the top five winners qualified for the final round.
According to Nepomuceno, the participants per school were divided into two teams. Each team is composed of three members.
The other SSAM team composed of Daniella Medina, Lattice Andriano and Beatrix Abella joined the elimination round last January 31, but failed to advance in the semi-final round, according to Nepomuceno.
Organized and sponsored by the UP Organization of Business Economics Majors (UP-OBEM), the Econ-No-Mix is an annual event that aims to benefit high school students and bring them to a much deeper understanding and appreciation of economics. Through the convention, students are given the opportunity to advance their skills and knowledge from the country’s economists and other practitioners of the field. Its events include quiz bee, essay writing, poster making, stock trading, idea generation, and debate contest.
This year’s Econ-No-Mix, which anchors on the theme “Greennovation: Catalyzing the Dawn for Sustainable Economic Development,” has been thrice awarded by the Junior Philippine Economics Society as the Best Organizational Activity for an academic year. To date, Econ-No-Mix is cited as the biggest economics feat for high school students in Metro Manila.
“We didn’t make it to the final round, but the lessons we learned through our experiences made us feel victorious,” Nepomuceno said.
The student-representatives in the quiz bee were trained by social studies teacher Mrs. Roselle Bariuan.
